Hidden Gems: Seesaw Opticians

Sale! From the 1st to the 12th of December 2023, Seesaw Opticians are offering 30% off their entire range!

As soon as you walk into Seesaw Opticians on Poplar Road, you immediately realise that this is not just any old high street optician. The atmosphere is warm and cosy, incense and calming music drift on the air.

Adam Georgiou, who founded the shop 4 years ago, welcomes me in with a warm smile and a hug. Adam, who originates from Greece, was born into optics. His family have been in the trade for 90 years, and he grew up around his father’s opticians in Aston. He did take over his father’s business for a while after his death, but soon decided that he had to put his own spin on the business. And so Seesaw was born.

Adam’s wife was already living in Kings Heath, and he was already familiar with the area when they decided to open a shop here. A shop like Seesaw, he says, could have been set up in any affluent area like Solihull or Dorridge, but Kings Heath was the right fit because of the community of people around here. And that community is really the bedrock upon which Seesaw is built. It’s clear that Adam thrives upon the connection with his neighbours as he stops talking for a second to wave to a passer-by in the street.

That isn’t to say that he hasn’t faced challenges – on the contrary – every small business has trying times at the start. At times, Adam says, he has struggled to find the right staff and suppliers that share his vision (no pun intended) for Seesaw as an opticians with, and for, the local community. It’s a testament to Adam’s intense focus on the customer experience that they have managed to get to where they are now.

Seesaw is also a project which is constantly evolving and improving. The shop has recently had a makeover inside, and Adam is investing in new testing equipment to be able to perform more thorough eye tests, and working on a website to enable an online booking system. However, for Adam, the most important thing is making sure that every patient that comes in leaves satisfied with their experience. To that end, everything in Adam’s shop is bespoke, making sure that there is something to fit everyone’s budget, style and concerns.

What Seesaw lacks in the scale of a larger chain opticians, it makes up for in friendly staff, a cosy atmosphere, and the best customer service available.

Adam’s Favourite Kings Heath Businesses: Root13, Borough + Fox Greengrocers, Harvest for their unique products and shop window displays, and Armadillo.
