Kings Heath Business Improvement District (‘Kings Heath BID’) are pleased to announce our first ever Kings Heath Poetry Slam Competition. You are invited to perform a poem for no longer than 3 minutes. You will be judged for performance, writing and originality.
· £75 – Kings Heath Poetry Competition Judge’s selected winner – At the Final, the Judges will select their favourite poet.
Entry Fee: There is NO entry fee
Who can enter?: the competition is open to anyone who is 18 years old or over. We do hope to have a separate under-18s poetry slam eventually. Only individual poets can apply – we don’t allow groups or teams.
The Performance: each poet will have 3 minutes to perform a poem. NO props nor background music/sound will be allowed. The subject matter can be on anything, but must be the poets own original work.
Round 1: poets can either submit a video of their performance, or turn up at one of our Round 1 Live heats. Please make sure you register before 5pm Tuesday 23rd April 2019 by emailing email@example.com. The first heats will be held in a Kings Heath venue on a Sunday afternoon in April/May.
From Round 1, the judges will select 28 poets to go through to the semi-finals.
· Semi-Finals: there will two semi-final rounds, with two sets of 14 poets in each. The semi-finals will take place in a Kings Heath venue, on a Tuesday evening.
7 poets will be selected from each semi-final to go to the final. The 7 poets will be chosen as follows: 6 poets selected by the judges; 1 poet by the audience. The semi-finals will take place in May/early June.
· The Final: The Final will take place in a venue in Kings Heath on a Tuesday evening in late June.
There will be 14 poets in the final. It will consist of two rounds, with each poet performing in each round. They must have different poems for each round in the Final. Two winners will be selected: ‘Audience vote’ and ‘Judges vote’

a. the Kings Heath Poetry Slam Competition (the “Competition”) is organised by Kings Heath Business Improvement District (“Kings Heath BID”)
b. the Competition is open to anyone who is 18 years or over. It is FREE to enter.
c. The deadline date for entries is 5pm on Tuesday 23rd April 2019.
d. All poets entering the competition must be contactable by e-mail, either directly or using an intermediary.
e. All work submitted for consideration must be the entrant's own work and have not been published.
f. Entries will be accepted only by e-mail.
g. All entries must provide their name and address.
i. Kings Heath BID will act in accordance with current UK data protection legislation in relation to your personal data.
2. Judging and selection
a. For Round 1, the judges will select a short-list of 28 poets to go through to the finals. Poets will be judged either by submitted videos of performances, or at a ‘turn-up-and-perform’ session that will take place on a Sunday afternoon in Kings Heath.
b. Any video submission for Round must be of a single poem, no longer than 3 minutes.
c. Any performance in any round, including the Final, must be no longer than 3 minutes. Points will be deducted if it runs over 3 minutes. The 3 minutes begins from the poet’s first word with the audience. Each performance, is allowed a 10 second grace period at the start.
d. The 28 short listed poets or groups from Round 1 will go forward to the Semi-Finals. There will be two semi-finals, each with 14 poets. 7 poets from each semi-final will be selected to go to the final. Of the 7 poets from each semi-final, 6 will be selected by the judges and 1 by the audience.
e. At the Final, there will be 14 finalists. There will be two rounds at the final and each poet will perform in each round. Their poems must be completely different in each round in the final.
f. From the final, two winners will be selected: the ‘audience vote’ and the ‘judges vote’
g. Entrants may win more than one of the prizes.
h. The judge’s decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
